William
(Bill) Soper
William (Bill) Soper was born on September
26, 1957. He married in 1982 and was father to a baby girl
in 1985. He spent his years with his family, being the best
father anyone could ask for, as well as a great friend. He
is sadly missed by many people and will always be remembered
in their hearts.
On October 18, 1999, Jeremy Matthew Coles was
out with his friends, stealing cars and using drugs. In the
early morning hours they stole a Ford Explorer and proceeded
to drive around town and do burn outs on peoples lawns. After
many hours, they decided they would get rid of the stolen
vehicle. They drove to a residential neighborhood, only blocks
away from an elementary school. Bill Soper woke up and got
ready for work and then went to take his 6 year old step-son
(Cody Gratton) to the babysitter's as he would any other day.
Cody loved to ride on Bill's motorcycle. He couldn't wait
for his daily ride down the street to the babysitter's. They
drove the same route every day.
This day was different though and they didn't
know their lives would be taken on the quiet back roads this
time. Jeremy Coles was rigging the trucks pedals with sticks
to make it speed down the street driverless. As Bill and Cody
turned the corner, they still did not see anything coming.
Coles then put the truck in drive and it sped uncontrollably
towards them, crossed into the oncoming lane and killing them
both instantly.
Coles fled the scene of the crime. He knew what
he had done and he ran. There was a manhunt for him and days
later, he turned himself in. He was convicted of two counts
of criminal negligance causing death. As well, he was prohibited
from driving for 15 years. He was sentanced to 10 years in
prison and was released on parole. Just over one year after
being released, he caused a car accident and injured more
people. He has since been incarcerated and is having a parole
hearing in October 2008 to be sentenced for breaking his parole.
My family and I pray that he will be back in
jail for many more years.
In Loving Memory of My Father
