Jomar Lanot
(continued)
These dreams and aspirations would soon be stolen
from him, and from his family. Shortly after dinner Jomar
asked his mother if he could join 3 of his friends for a quick
basketball game. Jenna at first asked Jomar not to go, as
it was getting dark, and rain had begun to fall again. Jomar
began to beg his mother to allow him to meet his friends,
acting silly, until Jenna began to laugh, and she finally
caved in to his antics. Jomar assured her everything would
be fine, and that he would be home right after the game. Jenna
had no reason to believe her son would not be safe, and so
she allowed him to go shoot some basketball with his friends,
after all it was just outside of Jomar’s high school.
Jenna had no idea that these would be the last
moments she would spend with her son. Jomar picked up his
back pack and left to meet his friends, but not before speaking
these words “Don’t worry Mama, I will come home
early after the game.” These were the words that would
haunt his mother for the rest of her living days.
The boys met at the Basketball court adjacent
to the Riley Park Recreation Centre. The boys played a few
games, and decided to start heading back towards home. Jenna
was at home waiting, and feeling a bit anxious as it was raining
and quite dark outside. Jenna picked up the phone and called
Jomar to see what was keeping him. Jomar told his mother they
were just drinking some water, and would be heading home right
away.
As the boys began their walk back home they
saw a group of teens as they approached Sir Charles Tupper
Secondary School, and as they walked past them they were swarmed,
and the boys heard some one yell “let’s get them!!”
This attack was unprovoked and random. The boys saw that they
had baseball bats a steering wheel club, Cricket bat and a
Glass bottle in their hands, so they began to run as fast
as they could. Jomar was unable to escape them as he lost
his footing and fell. Jomar was unable to defend himself from
the blows from his attackers. Five of the attackers beat Jomar
so severely that it crushed his head. Jomar lie there bleeding
to death, and alone.
