Our beloved son Jesse Penner was murdered by
Ryan Crossley, a ten time convicted young offender.
On that cold night in February, Jesse was ripped
from our lives. Our son had never and would never carry a
weapon but he was stabbed with a kitchen knife stolen at an
out of control house party. Jesse was not a participant at
the party; he was just dropping his girlfriend off at the
bus stop across the street. Jesse got out of the vehicle because
he recognized one of his brother’s friends was being
beaten.
Jesse was bathed in bear spray and later fatally
stabbed in the heart. Crossley would then kick our son repeatedly
in the head after fatally stabbing him.
The justice system failed us many times. Crossley
was out on bail waiting sentencing on a weapons related assault,
he was banned from carrying a weapon and he had a curfew of
11:00 pm. Jesse was murdered at 11:30 pm. Crossley was released
into the care of his parents, but legally they are not responsible
for anything even though they signed the release papers.
Crossley pleaded guilty to manslaughter and
was sentenced to six years; he will be eligible for parole
in forty-two months. Will the rest of my family and Jesse’s
friends be safe?
