A quote from Dr. Martin Luther King:
I say to you this morning, that if you have never found something so dear and precious to you that you will die for it, then you aren't fit to live. You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be, and one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls upon you to stand up for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And if you refuse to do it because you are afraid. You refuse to do it because you want to live longer. You're afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you're afraid that somebody will stab you or shoot you or bomb your house. So you refuse to take the stand. Well you may go on and live until you are ninety, but you are just as dead at 38 as you would be at ninety. And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit.
You died when you refused to stand up for right. You died when you refused to stand up for truth. You died when you refused to stand up for justice. Martin Luther King

Law abiding citizens have become a minority in
Canada . In comparison with other countries, crime rates in Canada are high, and the UN Crime Victims Survey has placed Canada in the “High Risk” group for violent crimes, even worse than the
United States . Why, you ask yourself, would self-respecting Canadians allow this to happen in our Country? It’s happening because for too long, we have turned a blind eye, we have become complacent to petty crime, and we have walked past that random person being intimidated or attacked for fear of getting involved.
We have allowed the criminal element so much freedom that they no longer fear prosecution. Offenders in this country enjoy all the rights and privileges our Charter of Rights entails, but suffer no consequences for their actions. Strict penalties, that are supposed to balance individual freedoms against the good of the community, have been legislated out of existence or watered down by the courts. The Justice System has become merely a legal system.
Our beautiful country is turning into our worst nightmare, a place where our children, and the aged are not the only ones living in fear. Everyday, not just here in BC, but all across
Canada , we hear of another murder, another pedophile, another home invasion, another young offender, who will walk amongst us on these very streets, waiting for their next victim. All of this is happening because our Justice System will not keep them behind bars, where they so rightly belong.
And what of the victims? The survivors of crime and their families are given a life sentence of grief, while the criminal has no remorse, no regret, for their actions. The lax sentences handed out by the courts offer neither an effective deterrent nor any comfort to the families of those victimized.
We need to pressure our government to act on these issues, before we lose another innocent life. For these criminals to go unpunished, we are not only condoning it, but we are feeding the criminal minds that are growing in our society.
We are pressuring the government for changes to the judicial system, for accountability for the judiciary, and for amendments to the Criminal Code that will protect all citizens from violence. We need your help to do this. Don’t wait until it’s your son/daughter, your wife/husband, or your neighbor is killed.
Speak up and take a stand now. Write to your MP’s, the newspapers, the Federal government. Make them aware that we all want change.
FACT needs the help of every Canadian who is tired of the injustice, sick of hearing of another killer who got off with a slap on the wrist. Everyone who is angry and disgusted with the way criminals are treated better than their victims. Your help can create change to the Justice System.
Canadian citizens who care about justice must stand up and make themselves heard. The government we elected to represent our interests must be reminded that they are accountable to protect the honest, hardworking people of this country.
The victims of crime deserve the same rights, privileges and freedoms that are so often used by the predators that perpetrate crime. The freedom to live without fear, to walk in our parks, to not be victimized.
We, the victims, will not be silent anymore! We will come together and force the government to do their job – the job of protecting our
Canada.
Everyone who has offered support and encouragement over the past few months, we thank you. We have had a tremendous amount of success so far, and we are confident that as the organization grows we will see more positive results.
